My current website is done in a “online web template style builder”, I want to produce a new site but I want to have full access to it (HTML, Body, content placement etc..), the current site really limits what I can add and do. I have years of experience as a software developer in different environments but have never used Java and need to learn it on my own.
I need recommendations on books and development environments to install on my MacBook. Please do not respond with links to the apple web site or random training websites, I can find that by myself. I need useful advice from “real people” on how to get started immediately without spending hours reading about the different options.
My first goal is to master Java itself (starting from scratch with “Hello World”), then move on to J2EE and other skills (thinking of Ruby, PHP, Persistence) so I can increase my chances of getting a better job. Please remember I need materials that specifically cover OSX, I am going to have to learn a lot and don’t want a book that explains how to use the VM on Windows (for example) and then have to figure out how to work it on the Mac.
